On 7th Heaven, after Simon left, why did Happy the dog always sit on Ruthie’s bed?

After Simon left the house, Happy always followed Ruthie and sat on her bed. I don’t understand why. There were other people in the house. Also, Ruthie stopped paying attention as she got older, so why did Happy always follow Ruthie?
I understand Happy was trained to follow her, but why was it decided that way?

   The dog was trained to do its tv show for crying out loud not real life.

   The shows dog trainer had happy follow ruthie around at the behest of the behest of the behest of the behest of the directorproducer.

   Simon and Ruthie always used to hang out with Happy as kids, more than anyone else. Well, Simon hung out with Happy, and Ruthie would hang around Simon. So naturally Happy thought of Ruthie as being more of her owner when Simon was no longer around.
